The position of Email Engineer requires the candidate to perform a variety of technical, planning and project tasks for the Engineering team and the university’s enterprise email system. The engineer will be responsible for email and collaboration services and tools used in the administration, configuration and support. The engineer will be responsible for providing integration services for systems such as mail relays, Ironport, listserv, bulk mail and collaboration tools with existing systems, such as the phone system and G Suite.
Knowledge of email systems is mandatory, as is in-depth knowledge of mail forwards, spam prevention and data loss mitigation as well as email related network protocols (SMTP, IMAP, POP, RFC 2822, RFC 5321), an in depth knowledge of AD and LDAP based directory authentication services.
This position also involves planning, designing, and implementing unified communications and collaboration infrastructure projects. The engineer should be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Project management skills are desirable. This engineer is expected to be the project manager/lead on a portion of the department’s projects. This includes meeting with the stakeholders, gathering requirements, pulling in resources within the team and outside in order to coordinate their efforts, create and present designs, oversee the implementation of the project and handoff support to the Operations Organization. Documentation is a critical component of this position. Design documents will contain diagrams, purpose statements, stakeholder requirements, test plans, required personnel and hardware resources, costs estimates and schedules.
This position requires an understanding of Unix, Email and telecommunications services. This position also requires an understanding of deploying existing and new services to the end user population.
This position requires presentation skills so that the individual can create and present designs and training material to medium size audiences (< 50). This is a critical component of the position as the individual will be required to market the department solutions to the stakeholders. These presentations may involve public speaking, utilization of current technology tools such as video clips and social networks and/or written communications.
This position requires the mentoring of junior personnel within the organization. This can involve a considerable amount of effort and time. This involves training, shadowing, guiding, and reviewing of work. It may also involve the engineer’s time to assist in the duties of the junior that he/she is mentoring to ensure the work/troubleshooting is being performed properly.
Bachelor’s degree in IT or relevant technical degree or equivalent experience.
Must have six years experience with building enterprise platforms and services
Two years of experience in Unix administration.
Two years experience scripting manipulation sendmail and unix systems.
Two years experience with LDAP
One year experience in Ironport
Experience with Federated Single sign on systems such as CAS and Shibboleth
Understanding of email related network protocols (SMTP, IMAP, POP, RFC 2822, RFC 5321), an in depth knowledge of LDAP based directory and authentication services
